Performance at Wembley Stadium

I have recently performed at the Wembley Stadium for the Prime Minister of India and the UK in the event UK Welcomes Modi.

The performance took place on 13th November, 2015. I performed as a part of the Shiamak Davar London Dance Team. This is the dance company that I am a part of outside college and we have performed at various places across England. This performance was quite special to us as it was the first time we were performing at the Wembley Stadium.

We performed two acts; we opened the show with our first act which was performed on the song, 'Maurya'. It is always auspicious to start things and new ventures in life with God's blessings and that is why we decided to perform this piece which was the celebration of God.

The dance style is an amalgamation of Indian folk styles and Indian contemporary. This act required a lot of strength and stamina and I would say devotion too.

I always believe that an act may look beautiful in terms of movement, lighting, costumes and stage production, however, if the dancer can not relate to the act, then the audience will not connect with it either. Thus, making it the dancers' responsibility to be able to project the act even through their emotions and expressions. I think that every performer who was a part of this act showed that they believed in the concept of this act and made the audience dance with joy too.

The second act that we performed was the last act of the night. This was performed with a live orchestra on the national song of India, 'Vande Mataram'. We rehearsed for this act through a draft version of the song that was played by the orchestra, however, we only got the final version during our technical rehearsals.

This piece was more contemporary based and it included a lot of leveling, layering and lifts. This piece was being performed just before the Prime Minister of India and UK were about to grace the stage. For this piece, the performers had been divided into the three colours that make up the Indian flag which are, orange, white and green. This was a representation of India and also a salute to mother India.
